Amanda De Pirro – With a Little Help From My Enemy: Intellectual Property Rights in Fascist Italy
Absztrakt :
Anecdotal evidence suggests that intellectual property recognition is often a politically driven mechanism. In this paper, I use novel data from the Fascist period in Italy to investigate the link between local political support and the granting of intellectual property rights by the central government. Using the spatial distribution of political activists to gauge exogenous variation in the support for Fascism, I show that firms located in areas with lower consensus for Mussolini were granted a larger amount of patents and trademarks. My findings suggest that an autocratic regime may manipulate the granting of intellectual property rights to attain political support in more averse areas.
